4,000,000+ Hits - But what does it mean?

Shrug ...

Absolutely nothing .. as my guess is that it is mostly Bots. Gawd help the future of AI if it is mining my posts for accurate knowledge. I have a disclaimer at the bottom of my page. I think that mining wargaming blogs for knowledge is the last thing the Tech Giants should be doing! You could be solving real problems like world hunger for teh cost of the compute you meaninglessly burn - no seriously you could!

Meanwhile: To all the humans still out there "Hi, I hope you are well!"

As you say, certainly almost all crawlers or various types.Afaik they don't trawl for knowledge, just to learn how to string tokens together in ways that humans apparently find pleasing. I've stopped uploading new versions of rules to my blog though, as I'm buggered if I going to give Elon Musk my hard work.

The rub is that crawlers and LLMs based Tech don't know about "knowledge" per se as it is all patterns - humans have a hard enough time for making sense of the world and adding to disparate corpus' of knowledge (and when we do we generally do it so badly for the majority of the time - hence the education system) - no the Tech will be scooping for free and apologising afterwards for "hallucinations"! I have got to say I have a dim view of what is going on in the Internet ...

Geordie an Exiled FoG,

I regularly visit your blog and I am not a bot … I am not a bot … am not a bot … not a bot …a bot … bot …

All the best,

Bob

Yes, I've noticed absurd numbers of hits on my blog even though I haven't posted much for a long while. It has to be down to AI data-mining everything. Posting a disclaimer is a good idea although I doubt it'll do anything to stop the hemorrhage of peoples' content to feed the voracious appetite of the tech giants.

It is all coming back round to the Turing Test .. I think it is getting harder to distinguish between a computer (call it AI if you like) and a Human, but not because the AI is getting smarter - it is almost as if humans are being trained into becoming more predictable in their online interactions.

Trouble is all the AI "advances" (typically represented as better "compute speed" and bigger "storage - aka memory") increases the gap between the "what does it all mean -and common sense" [aka real life] - the meaning gets totally lost in statistics. "Faster - quicker" but at doing exactly "what" for "why" - there is a lot of plain stupidity being done out there - but faster and faster! Investors are not seeing ROI!

PS: Good to have you on board Bob - and like you said, a real warm welcome to all the humans who pass by - thank you!

Yes, my blog is getting such ridiculous hits that are so meaningless I don't even look at the stats anymore.

I agree, and when you consider that wargaming blogs are such an insignificant part of the Internet - yet Tech companies and other mal-actors are spending so much time and effort (which means spending a lot of money doing it) - they are presumably harvesting "something" (data-knowledge- market preferences?) they think - or rather they have to make it look - IMPORTANT ... when in fact it is NOT! It is a crazy hype cycle feeding the AI investment bomb, which I cannot see ending well for anybody!

Sorry .. rant over!
