As promoted by Rex Brynen on Paxsims and other bloggers such as Murdocks Marauders, here is a nice short YoyTube video describing the development of wargaming:

Not sure that I completely agree with his final Audible book recommendation .. now a word from our sponsors!

Geordie an Exile FoG,
I watched the video, and found it interesting.
Like you, I could have done without the sponsor message at the end ... but it was a lot better than a lot of them.
All the best,
Bob
Hi
There is a kriegspiel cabinet in Berlin's Charlottenberg Palace... unfortunately you can't see what is in the draws... I'd guess it would be the original 1780s version...
Cheers Bob,
I found it very interesting too particularly as it promoted the link to the precursor of Kriegspiel and the fact that lots of people were inclined to play about with Chess - from Christoph Wieckhmann's [which looked very modern] to Johann Hellwig's game, the latter one that Rieswitz (snr) played when he was studying at the Military Academy - addicted akin to many a teenagers obsession with D&D and/or computer games!
Ed Griffiths - a letter perhaps to the Director pointing out what an relatively uninteresting piece of furniture could be a very interesting centrepiece display
Looks like an opportunity missed there!
Best Wishes
Mark
Interesting - thanks for sharing it
Renko - the Rieswitz was knowledge from Peter Perla's "Art of War" book and Ed McCaffrey's recent wargaming both - but the like to Hellwigs game took me by surprise as it looks so "relatively modern" - many wargamers seem to be going back to a [Complex] Simplicity in that a few rules and principles can bottom up processing lead to interesting emergent play that can entertain.
Looking forward to the next game .. Mosquitoes yet to hit the painting tray so no 633 Squadron yet but it is coming (although I have the urge to get a full squadron)
